Too Much To Tweet: Twitter

Subtraction by addition.

About a month back, our social media team brainstormed an idea for a new micro-blog series. “Too Much To Tweet” is designed to give our staff a platform to speak our minds on various topics in a format that doesn’t justify a full-fledged blog post, but may be a little too long to fit into a Tweet. While we were putting together an initial cluster of content, a story broke that was too good to pass up for the series’ maiden voyage. This week, Twitter announced they will be testing out extending their character count from 140 to 280. Not only is this in direct contradiction with a stance Twitter’s own CEO took just a couple years ago, when he claimed they would not abandon a feature that was so quintessentially Twitter’s, but it’s hard to think of a more contrived way to turn their misfortunes around than by simply doubling a character count. Even with that addition, we couldn’t fit this rant in. With share value on the line, apparently nothing is sacred. Not a defining feature. Not a CEO’s word. Nothing. Poor form, Twitter.
