Whether you see it as the last year of a tumultuous decade or a fresh start to the 20s, this year will be pivotal in many ways. We will hold our 59th presidential election, Japan will host the Olympics and Argentina will welcome a total solar eclipse. Tesla’s electric truck will hit the streets, Friends will resurface on HBO Max and baseball fans from all over the world will converge on Dyersville, Iowa, to see the Yankees and the White Sox play on the Field of Dreams.
Here at Civilian we’re thrilled to see the positive momentum on some much needed change including:
- The emergence of high-speed rail as the sustainable future of travel. Several systems are making progress or set to break ground this year including Virgin’s Victorville to Vegas route.
- The U.S. military has pledged to get half its energy from renewable resources this year and this could push pricing changes that will finally make biofuels cost-competitive with fossil fuels.
While we have a lot to look forward to we also face some serious challenges. For the first time in decades, life expectancy is dropping in the U.S. driven by increases in so-called “deaths of despair” including suicide, drug overdoses and complications of obesity and alcohol use. Here in San Diego, we are focused on plans to reduce homelessness by delivering thousands of new supportive housing units, more housing aid and improvements to the city’s homeless-service system. Also coming this year, a ballot measure providing essential funding to develop the transit and mobility infrastructure necessary to keep San Diego a desirable, sustainable and attainable place to live.
