Live Beyond, Best Public Health Campaign

Adverse Childhood Experiences and toxic stress are one of California’s most urgent public health issues. Through the Live Beyond campaign we created for the Office of the California Surgeon General, we showed Californians — particularly youth and caregivers — that ACEs are common and healing is within reach. There are everyday things you can do to address stress, which can have ripple effects in your physical and mental health, and relationships.

Live Beyond Award Winner

Using culturally grounded, youth-led messaging tested through focus groups, social listening and community feedback, Live Beyond paid special attention to BIPOC, Tribal and underserved communities. We partnered with Twitch streamer Valkyrae, literacy influencer (and Reading Rainbow’s new host!) Mychal Threets, and platforms like Refinery29 and Native American media. Spanish-language resources drew in one-fifth of all site visitors.

More than 809,000 people visited the site to access tools for resilience and mental wellbeing. Valkyrae’s streams alone reached over 260,000 unique viewers, igniting real-time conversations about stress and healing.

A post-campaign study found a 31% increase in young people who felt empowered to take action on their mental health. With more than 30 in-person events and $2.47 million in additional earned media, Live Beyond left a lasting, supportive, motivating imprint on communities across California.

Never a Bother, Best Microsite

Launched to address the tragic spike in youth suicide that began during the pandemic, Never a Bother is the campaign we created for California Department of Public Health’s Office of Suicide Prevention. Our Youth Advisory Board guided every creative decision.

Never a Bother Award Winner

NeveraBother.org’s microsite combines bold, retro-inspired visuals that exude optimism without sacrificing the urgency or seriousness at hand. The copy is relatable, real and empathetic. Tough conversations are softened by animated flower characters, suggestions on what to say, and friendly navigation, guiding users to sources of help without overwhelming them. A simple homepage meets youth where they are — whether they’re looking for support for themselves, a friend, or someone in their care. A standout “Get Help Now” button offers immediate access to crisis lines.

Since its launch in March 2024, Never a Bother has reached more than 1.5 million unique visitors. More than half of page views come from young people seeking immediate help for themselves or their friends. Caregivers also engaged deeply, spending the most time on support content tailored to them.

The platform Civilian created for Never a Bother doesn’t just offer support — it also builds community through empathy, clarity, and youth-driven design.

As always, we’re deeply grateful to all our clients for their trust and partnership, and to our youth advisors and subject-matter experts for their candid and powerful guidance. We’re so proud of the work and results of these paradigm-shifting, stigma-undoing, life-saving initiatives.
