SAN DIEGO, CA (August 24, 2021) – Civilian Agency continues to build on a three-year trajectory of strong growth. The California-based marketing communications agency dedicated to strengthening communities and inspiring meaningful change recently won a high-profile new contract, expanded and renewed campaigns for major clients, moved into new space downtown, and brought on key new hires in communications, public relations, and media services.

In March, Civilian was awarded a 15-month contract to work with the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Program, its members, and community stakeholders to create a new statewide social marketing campaign focused on reducing mental health stigma, preventing suicide, and increasing access to mental health care for all Californians. The campaign will focus on educating Californians as well as underserved audiences including Latinx, Youth, Rural and Disadvantaged populations.

The agency recently renewed a multimillion-dollar five-year contract with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), to develop, negotiate and implement integrated media plans.

Civilian was also awarded an expanded contract for PaintCare, a nonprofit leftover paint stewardship program, that will extend its services to Connecticut, Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C. The agency will evaluate, improve, and implement a comprehensive media strategy to increase awareness and action around proper disposal of unwanted, leftover paint.

To serve a growing list of new client projects, Civilian has bolstered its ranks with three talented and experienced new hires.

  • Padma Nagappan, Senior Public Relations Manager, joins Civilian from San Diego State University, where she served as senior science and research communications strategist. She worked closely with campus leaders on ideation, crafted compelling content, and secured earned media coverage in local, national and international media to raise the university’s research profile. Prior to SDSU, Nagappan was an award-winning business, health and environment reporter for 17 years for news outlets including KPBS, the San Diego Union-Tribune, U.S. News and World Report, and Everyday Health. She brings deep expertise in strategy and content development as well as strong media relationships and local market connections.
  • Joe Camero recently joined Civilian as Senior Media Relations Manager. Camero is an award-winning public relations veteran with more than 20 years of corporate, agency, and nonprofit experience. He has led media relations, marketing communications, public affairs, crisis communications, and served as spokesperson for leading organizations in the areas of healthcare, waste management, telecommunications, and youth development. At Civilian, Camero leads media outreach and influencer engagement campaigns, and contributes to the agency’s strategy and research department.
  • Denise Stovall, Paid Media Supervisor, brings key expertise in media planning, buying, analysis, and management. Stovall was previously with Red Door Interactive serving in increasingly senior positions leading up to paid media strategist. She developed comprehensive digital media plans and managed paid media strategy and tactical development for clients in the nonprofit, higher education, and biotechnology fields. Having worked with clients such as the YMCA and Northern Arizona University, Stovall’s focus is on maximizing clients’ advertising spend for the best return on investment.

Civilian is pleased to welcome its new team members and looks forward to building on the momentum gained thus far this year as the agency settles into a new office at Twenty by Six on 451 A Street, Suite 150, San Diego. Taking advantage of a renter’s market, the agency has moved to an expansive new space downtown with easy access to public transit, enabling many of its employees to reduce their carbon footprint.
