San Diego, June 7, 2018 — Civilian, a full-service marketing agency, today announced it has named two new members to its executive team: Amon Rappaport to the newly created position of Vice President of Strategic Development, and Gregg O’Neill as Creative Director. Rappaport’s role will include driving business growth with purpose-driven brands and leading social impact campaigns. O’Neill will lead the agency’s creative department to help support the agency’s new business growth and push the boundaries on creative strategies.

“Over the last decade we have shifted our agency focus to work that strengthens communities by tackling complex social issues for our clients like suicide prevention, mental illness and recycling,” said Stacey Nelson Smith, President and CEO of Civilian. “Amon and Gregg join Civilian at a time when this focus and dedication has fueled substantial growth and their leadership will help continue to strengthen our work and the agency’s future direction.”

Rappaport has worked throughout his 20-year career to advance public health, sustainability, and social resilience among diverse populations on a range of issues, including conservation of land, water and energy; reducing youth alcohol, tobacco, and drug use; and creating youth job and education opportunities. His track record includes delivering impact for Fortune 500 companies including Best Buy, Qualcomm, and a group of the world’s largest automakers, Obama and Clinton White House initiatives, and nonprofits like Common Sense Media and The Conservation Fund. Rappaport began his career in the health care social marketing practice of Porter Novelli in Washington, DC, where he worked with clients including the “truth” anti-smoking campaign and The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

“I am thrilled to lead our work with purpose-driven brands like Best Buy and WD-40 Company,” said Rappaport. “It is an honor to help amplify the impact these companies are having on people and the planet by using smart strategies and engaging stories.”

O’Neill joins Civilian with more than 25 years of advertising agency experience. Throughout his career, O’Neill has provided creative leadership for launching many new brands, as well as, reviving and reshaping existing ones. Among the list of major brands that O’Neill has designed creative campaigns for are Merrill Lynch, Citibank, United States Postal Service, Comcast, BASF, McGladrey, Nationwide, and most recently, Lowe’s. O’Neill also has worked for some of the most respected agencies, including: Red Tettemer, Mullen, Foote, Cone & Belding, and J. Walter Thompson.

“For years, I’ve helped clients sell everything from cable TV to checking accounts to chainsaws,” said O’Neill. “I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to help make a difference. I want the work I do to matter. It’s a passion I share with the folks here at Civilian and it feels really good.”

In the first half of 2018, Civilian has added five new clients—Best Buy, County of San Diego Department of Public Works, MiraCosta College, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and Southwestern College. These clients join many others with success stories, from the San Jose Police Department, PaintCare, the County of San Diego, the California Earthquake Authority and more.
