The Job
The Proposal and Content Writer is responsible for developing written content that is easy to read, engaging, and persuasive, and helps achieve the client’s or the agency’s goals. The person in this key agency role will partner with subject-matter experts and agency staff to develop the strategy, approach, and content for agency and client needs, including business development proposals, case studies, collateral materials, newsletter articles, blog posts, social media content, website copy, and award submissions. Provides copywriting, editing, and proofreading to create pieces that the client and the agency are proud to submit or publish.


Day-to-Day Activities:

Proposal Writer (34%):

  1. Determine proposal outlines and content needs by studying requests for proposals (RFPs), attending strategy meetings, and working closely with the Proposal Lead and Subject-Matter Experts.
  2. Write key agency content for business development proposals.
  3. Collect, organize, and revise proposal content submitted by project team members.
  4. Improve proposal-writing results by evaluating and re-designing processes, approach, coordination, and boilerplates, volunteering ideas for improvements, and implementing changes.
  5. Support the Proposal Lead throughout the proposal process, meeting proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval, coordinating requirements with contributors, and contributing proposal status information during review meetings.
  6. Contribute to content and rationale of proposal graphics (working with graphic designer).
  7. Maintain quality results by using templates and following proposal-writing standards, including readability, consistency, and tone.
  8. Maintain proposal content database.

Agency Marketing Needs (33%):

  1. Produce strong, engaging marketing content for the agency, including website copy, collateral content, annual reports, newsletter articles, case studies, blog posts, infographics, and other assets.
  2. Revise case studies into abstracts for award submissions and conference presentations.
  3. Edit agency content to ensure voice, grammar, and style is on point.
  4. Identify gaps in the existing content library and recommend new topics and formats.
  5. Work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging, branding, and style.

Client Marketing Needs (33%):

  1. Produce strong, engaging marketing content for clients, including collateral content, website copy, newsletter articles, blog posts, and social media content.
  2. Edit documents and collateral material prepared by staff members for content, clarity, and voice consistency, recommending revisions and editorial standards as appropriate.
  3. Distill complex concepts into content that is easily understood at multiple levels.
  4. Optimize articles for SEO and accessibility.
  5. Identify gaps in a client’s existing content library and recommend new topics and formats.
  6. Help create style guides for client writing to ensure alignment and consistency.


  • 7+ years of writing experience in the areas of marketing, communications, public relations, and/or outreach; agency experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience producing well-crafted copy for a variety of audiences, education, and engagement levels.
  • Must know how to use content to connect emotionally with a variety of groups from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to ideate, gather, and organize ideas into carefully crafted stories and content that inspires audiences to take our desired action
  • Expertise using language to change perceptions, build support for causes, and encourage action
  • A knack for writing short and succinct copy that keeps the reader engaged
  • An eye for both newsworthy angles and commercially targeted content
  • Understanding grammar rules and how to construct clear sentences with an eye for flow, readability, and sentence variety
  • An understanding of search engine optimization best practices
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Problem-solver with excellent attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills
