Account Supervisor

Civilian has worked with government agencies and community organizations at the forefront of California’s most stubborn public health and community issues. From healthy eating, suicide prevention, and mental health stigma reduction to recycling, conservation, and disaster preparedness—we turn audience research and insights into education and outreach strategies that ultimately influence individual behavior. 

And right now, we’re looking for an experienced Account Supervisor (AS) with a passion for social change and community improvement to champion client strategy and make a significant difference with some of our most important clients in the Public Health and Transportation verticals.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing ongoing business relationships from the prospect stage through existing account management. The AS leads and manages a large piece of business and client engagements. The position is responsible for the overall client satisfaction, quality of service, and on-time, on-budget completion of the agency’s services. 


This position is ideally based out of our San Diego main office, but we will entertain the right candidate located in the Sacramento area.


Client Services (70%):

  • Mastery of all agency outputs and deliverables and confident knowledge in how to execute and what resources will be needed
  • Proactively seeks out optimizations to increase agency/ team output and efficiency
  • Escalation point for most client issues and first line of communication for internal
  • Innate ability to manage up keeping manager aware and abreast of successes, failures and foreseen opportunities or issues in addition to timely updates on the health of the account with proactive recommendations on how to advance/improve
  • Viewed and respected as subject master with senior clients, continually providing POVs and recommendations to better their business
  • Author and edit all proposed client briefs, share with manager for approval, and responsible for client facilitation, edits, and approval
  • Proven and willingness to mentor and grow all junior resources by authorizing and monitoring progress towards PDP and making timely suggestions for optimization and advancement/ success at the agency
  • Oversee outputs and projects from direct reports and editing/ suggesting improvements when necessary prior to client share
  • Highly strategic with the ability to seek out/recognize/author insights for direction to cross-functional teams to execute
  • Authoring of agency white papers, POVs, and other content as needed based on area of expertise to position agency in a positive light
  • Innate ability to straddle between client advocate and agency representative and comfortable pushing back when necessary to preserve agency/work best interest


Project Management (15%):

  • In-depth knowledge of client(s) finance and billing status, fiscal ownership, and approval of monthly invoicing progress and responsible for on-time or early delivery based on established agency processes.
  • Always mindful of budgets and looking to grow relationships organically and through offering of relevant agency services when necessary. 
  • Oversees production process, ensures quality outcome, within budget and timeline.
  • Subject matter expert in agency systems, including Workamajig project management software and various agency tools.


Business Development (15%):

  • Heavily involved in business development pitches, supporting senior staff where necessary, and capable of leading collaboration from start to finish.
  • “Always on” mentality when it comes to organic or new business growth and proactively bringing proposals/ideas to the manager on how, when, and why the agency should address and go after organic growth.


Job requirements:

  • 7-10+ years of experience within an advertising agency setting.
  • Relevant experience in Public Health, Transportation, and Outreach is a bonus (Community Stakeholder management experience is required for this position) 
  • Ability to manage mid to large-sized projects autonomously and manage up for larger initiatives
  • Mastery of Advertising Agency cross disciplines and departments, their outputs (especially media) and how they work together in an integrated, 360 plan and how to sell services in.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; capable of writing and speaking with a clear, concise point-of-view and should be comfortable presenting internally/ externally if necessary
  • Track record of presenting information to senior management, public groups, stakeholders, and boards of directors. 
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to relate to, persuade, and build consensus with clients while educating them on emerging media and traditional marketing tactics
  • Ability to define and solve problems, analyze data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  
  • A history of overseeing client accounts in an Account Services role, managing both client and internal team expectations, and leading the execution of tactical projects
  • Proven record of success in leadership, with experience managing, coaching, and guiding multiple team members
  • Project management prowess with a keen eye for details, plus the inclination to manage ahead and bring others along. Experience using PM systems a plus.
  • Excellent financial management ability and experience with budget management and reconciliation 
  • Strong ability to recognize and plan for crisis control
  • Outstanding abilities in maintaining healthy relationships   
  • Experience with managing and developing direct reports towards success at agency and within the industry
